One of the benefits of Mountain biking at night is that the same trail that you have gone down so many times is starting to be too easy or just plain old boring.

Riding at night breathes new life into that old trail, makes it feel exciting and new. It´s going to get your heart pumping and your gonna feel the adrenalin surging through your body.

Mountain biking at night makes an old trail seem new

The thrill of riding when it is so dark outside that you have to get one of the best trail lights out there just so you won’t go off the trails and into the bushes.

But mountain biking at night is great when you have been stuck at the office all day and just want to blow off a little steam.

So instead of watching tv or staring at your phone all night, you can go out get your bike and just take a ride. Even better if you get your friends to go riding with you.

Then you have someone to get you of the couch and go out in the evening when maybe you don’t feel like doing anything.

If you want to go mountain biking at night there are a few things we recommend. Like what kind of light and equipment you need, also recommended practices.

Lights

You need light, that is quite obvious. You should not just get any light for your bike.

What you need is a light that is at least 1000 lumen. You might be wondering how powerful is 1000 lumen well an average candle is around 30 lumen.

It is also best to have a dual sett up that is a smaller light on your helmet and a larger light on your handlebars

It is better to have a smaller light on the helmet because it is easier to move your head.

The light on the handlebars is heavier and more powerfull. A good light can be in the 3000 to 4000-lumen range.

What you also have to keep in mind is the burn time on your lights. You do not want to run out of juice halfway into your ride.

So it can be a good idea to bring another light or an extra battery pack.

It is important to adjust the light on the handlebars correctly. You do not want the beam to close to the wheel. Then you won’t have enough time to react if something suddenly appears in front of you.

Also, you do not want the beam to be too far in front of you. Then you will have a dark gap in front of you. So you want to adjust the light in that sweet spot in between.

Take someone with you when

It is best to take someone with you when you go mountain biking at night. Aside from the obvious fact that it is more fun. It can also be safer in case you get disoriented or hurt.

Familiarize yourself with the trail

So when you find that riding buddy what you are going to want to do is use a trail that you are familiar with. Because if you are not used to night riding it can be disorienting to go riding at night.

A trail you know like the back of your hand can look totally different at night. So when you are not used to riding at night it is very easy to get lost, especially if you don’t know the trail very well.

When you are checking the route out in the daytime just try to remember sharp turns or blind hills things that can catch you off guard at night.

Let someone know

It’s also wise to let someone know where your riding in case you fall and hurt yourself or get lost. You never know what might go wrong so it is better to let someone know. It can be someone you live with a friend or a neighbor, like I said it is better to be safe than sorry.

Meeting point

Also, it can be a good idea to have a designated meeting point with your riding buddies. It is always better to have someplace to meet up with later in case someone gets lost or something happens.

When you are riding with your buddies be careful not to shine a light on their face. It can be very annoying when someone does that and it can ruin their night vision so try not to do that if you can.

Riding in twilight

Your light is not going to do a lot of good in twilight no matter how powerful they are. Also, your night vision is not going to be very good at twilight time either.

It is better to wait until it is properly dark before going out for a night ride. Because if the light is not going to help you then your more likely to crash.

Take tools with you

If your bike breaks down for some reason it is a good idea to have a spare tube for your bike. Also, it’s a good idea to have a small multi-tool in your backpack and a pump.

Just in case you get a flat or you need to adjust your light or something else on your bike. Because if you’re walking back with a flat at night and your light is running out of battery. Well, that is not something you are going to want to experience.

Final Thoughts

We’ve gone over what kind of lights you need and what you should look out for. Also what the importance of knowing the route you are riding at night. Because riding at night increases the difficulty level considerably.

So there are a number of things you should look out for when you are planning to take a ride at night. But as long as you are careful, mountain biking at night should be an exciting experience. So find a friend that is as crazy as you and check out the trails on your mountain bike.
